Net interest margin rose 13 basis points to 1.71 per cent for the quarter, from 1.58 per cent from a year ago, as asset yields outpaced higher funding costs amid a rapidly rising interest rate environment, said OCBC.Non-interest income was up 6 per cent to S$1.18 billion, on higher trading income and life insurance profit.Meanwhile, the bank’s non-performing loans ratio was lowered to 1.3 per cent from 1.5 per cent a year ago.Annualised earnings per share stood at S$1.31 for the quarter, up 27.2 per cent from S$1.03 a year ago. The earnings beat the S$1.27 billion consensus forecast based on a Bloomberg survey of 4 analysts.The lender also declared an interim dividend of S$0.28 per share for the period, up from S$0.25 previously.For the first half of the year, net profit for the bank rose 7 per cent to S$2.84 billion from S$2.66 billion earlier, which OCBC attributed largely to higher net interest income and lower allowances.Total allowances fell to S$116 million, compared with S$393 million in the previous year, mainly due to a decline in allowances for impaired loans.“Overall economic growth in our key markets is expected to remain positive this year but at a slower pace due to the heightened headwinds in the operating environment,” said OCBC chief executive Helen Wong.“Despite heightened market volatilities, we are pleased to see net new money inflows in our wealth management business, as well as healthy new insurance sales.
