YouTube Increases Subscription Prices in the U.S. for the First Time in Nearly Three Years

YouTube, owned by Alphabet, has raised its subscription prices in the United States for the first time in nearly three years, reflecting a broader shift in the streaming industry.

The price increases are significant: the Premium Lite plan rises from $7.99 to $8.99, the individual plan from $13.99 to $15.99, and the family plan from $22.99 to $26.99. YouTube Music prices have also increased, with the individual plan now priced at $11.99 and the family plan at $18.99. These changes will apply to both new and existing subscribers, though current users will receive approximately 30 days' notice.

YouTube's explanation is straightforward. The company stated that the price adjustments help support the continued delivery of features users value, such as ad-free viewing, background playback, and access to a vast music library of over 300 million tracks.

However, looking at the bigger picture, this is not just a YouTube-specific issue. As streaming platforms shift their focus from merely pursuing user growth to increasing revenue per user, they have been gradually raising prices.
