Last year yielded substantial achievements, with Guangdong securing the second-highest number of awards nationwide at the 18th Wenhua Awards. From March 15 to 17, the 2026 Guangdong Provincial Art Work Special Training and Art Creation Conference was held in Guangzhou. It was revealed at the conference that this year, artistic creation in Guangdong will focus on five major aspects to elevate the province's art initiatives to a new level.
The conference highlighted that in 2025, the province's art sector concentrated on producing high-quality literary and artistic works, enriching the supply of premium cultural content, and steadily advancing art-related endeavors. Last year's artistic output was particularly fruitful. The dance drama "Awakening·Lion," a decade in the making, ultimately won the Wenhua Grand Prize. Cantonese opera "Red Headscarf" and opera "Overseas Chinese Mail" received individual Wenhua Awards, placing Guangdong second nationally in total awards at the 18th Wenhua Awards. A series of outstanding stage works, including Cantonese operas "The Fragrance of Daughter," "Decisive Battle: The Spark," and "Skeleton's Lament," as well as plays "Golden Ruins," "Mr. Sun Yat-sen," "Hope You Are Well," and "Gilded Feast," along with the symphony concert "Sea Dragon," were successfully staged. Sixty-nine projects were selected for inclusion in 18 national-level key literary and artistic programs and brand activities.
Major cultural and artistic events in Guangdong were vibrant and dynamic. Marking the 100th anniversary of Hong Xiannu's birth, a high-level symposium was held, accompanied by dozens of commemorative activities such as classic revivals, special performances, academic seminars, and thematic exhibitions, coordinated with literary and art circles in Hong Kong and Macao. The fifth Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cultural and Art Festival was enhanced, and a "Greater Bay Area Art Week" was successfully organized in Shanghai in collaboration with Hong Kong and Macao, reinforcing the image of a cultural community within the bay area. The exhibition "Mission of Renewal: A Century of Guangdong Art" was brought to Hong Kong and Shanghai, further expanding the influence of Lingnan art.
The conference emphasized that artistic creation is a core indicator of cultural prosperity and a vital component in meeting the public's demand for high-quality spiritual enrichment. It called for integrating resources, establishing rules, optimizing ecosystems, and driving innovation and reform to guide and stimulate artistic creativity across society, thereby advancing the province's art sector.
The conference outlined five key areas for Guangdong's artistic creation efforts: establishing and improving systems for topic planning and reserve, repertoire demonstration, script review, and role evaluation to refine the mechanism for creating high-quality art; developing robust promotion, marketing, and communication exchange mechanisms to enhance the impact of artistic works; deepening the "one troupe, one policy" reform for provincial art troupes to invigorate their creative production; innovating talent evaluation and incentive mechanisms to cultivate leading artists and outstanding young talents; and strengthening art theory research and critical review to foster a conducive environment for artistic creation.
