From "Northeast Super League" to "Factory BA": A Schedule Uniting Northeast China's New "Sports+" Revitalization Track

Deep News04-02

The first-round matchups for the 2026 Northeast China Urban Football League, known as the "Northeast Super League," were recently determined at a draw ceremony attended by multiple Olympic champions and sports legends. Concurrently, the "Factory BA" basketball tournament is in full swing, with over 600 workers trading their uniforms for jerseys, seamlessly transitioning from production lines to the three-point line. By 2026, the "sports+" initiative is bringing not just attention and engagement but also opening a window into the region's development—revealing urban transformation, cultural vitality, and improvements in the business environment. Centered on public participation and deeply integrating culture, sports, tourism, and commerce, these "sports+" branded events are becoming a new engine for Northeast China’s comprehensive revitalization.

On March 30, the draw ceremony for the "Northeast Super League" in Shenyang attracted significant attention just through its lineup of special guests. Olympic champions including speed skater Ning Zhongyan, short track skater Zhou Yang, boxer Li Qian, and football legend Sun Jihai took the stage, representing eight cities across four provinces and autonomous regions, setting the matchups for the opening round on May 23. Beyond the draw participants, several winter sports Olympic champions crossed over to join the event, generating buzz even before the competition begins. Freestyle skiing aerials champion Wang Xindi’s involvement with the Shenyang team went viral online. Zhou Yang, cheering for her hometown Jilin team, remarked, “This is my first time participating in a football-related event, and I hope my home team achieves great results.”

While star athletes attract attention, it is the participation of ordinary people that gives the events lasting vitality. On March 27, the 2026 Shenyang "Factory BA" basketball tournament and the third Tiedong District "Factory BA" kicked off at the Shenyang Tiedong Gymnasium. Over the next two months, 48 corporate teams and more than 600 industrial workers will compete in over 100 matches. The opening game featured Shenyang Blower Works Group Co., Ltd. against Shenyang Aircraft Industry (Group) Co., Ltd., with 23-year-old fitter Luo Junxi igniting the crowd with a long-range three-pointer. A member of last year’s runner-up team, Luo is determined to win the championship this year. His opponent, Shenfei team’s point guard Li Han, noted that the teamwork emphasized in basketball applies equally to fighter jet production schedules: individual speed is ineffective without coordination, synchronization, and mutual support to ensure smooth production line operations.

Events like "Factory BA" and the "Northeast Super League" are seen as key to building a recognizable public sports IP by integrating professional and amateur competitions, as well as competitive sports and public fitness. These events have evolved beyond pure athletic contests into comprehensive platforms that showcase culture, boost tourism, and stimulate consumption. At the "Factory BA" opening ceremony, a themed market called "Workshop Fun Zone" featured Shenfei aircraft models and Shengu compressor displays, while a food street drew long queues. Organizers also launched a smart mini-program linking dining, accommodation, travel, shopping, and entertainment, turning a single game ticket into a citywide economic driver.

Cultural elements were also prominent at the "Northeast Super League" draw, with traditional dances from Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning captivating the audience. Zhang Yixin, a performer of Jilin’s iconic "elephant-hat dance," expressed hope that the platform would help share their cultural traditions. Commercial interest in these sports events is growing, with initial sponsorship for the "Northeast Super League" exceeding 60 million yuan. Notably, three sponsorship slots were reserved at no cost for small businesses, allowing them to benefit from the "sports+" wave.

Shenyang Vice Mayor Liu Kebin described both events as vital windows showcasing Northeast China’s revitalization. As the region begins its 15th Five-Year Plan period, progress is evident across sectors: major industrial projects are underway, innovation is accelerating, and cultural tourism is booming, with record-breaking visitor numbers during the Spring Festival. The "Northeast Super League," connecting eight cities and nearly 400 players from Shenyang to Yanbian, represents a new model of regional collaboration focused on public engagement. More than just competitions, these events serve as tests and showcases of the local business environment, with efficient approvals, smooth corporate cooperation, and thorough logistical support reflecting a renewed spirit of proactive governance. As one enterprise representative involved in the league’s preparation noted, “From idea to execution, everything gets a green light—that’s the change happening in the Northeast.”

From workshops to courts, and from "Factory BA" to the "Northeast Super League," this "sports+" initiative is telling the story of Northeast China’s revitalization.
