Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated at a summit that day that the "Genesis Mission" program received over 5,000 applications, ultimately selecting 278 projects for funding. According to Department of Energy Under Secretary for Science Dario Hill, the funded projects cover critical areas including biomedicine, grid reliability, national security, quantum computing, and microelectronics manufacturing. The single largest investment amounts to $60 million, aimed at applying AI technology to advance nuclear facility construction and reduce operational costs. Key metrics for evaluating the initiative's success will include breakthroughs in quantum computing, development of cutting-edge and open-source models, training of young scientists, and construction of AI supercomputers.
According to reports, the "Genesis Mission" was established under an executive order signed by the administration in November 2025. In a newly released report, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy argues that research funding, traditionally concentrated in universities and other academic institutions, should gradually be redirected toward directly supporting individual researchers and the applied development of AI technology. US officials stated that the "Genesis Mission" is the core mechanism for implementing this reform of the scientific funding system.
