Samsung Electronics to Supply Next-Generation HBM4 Chips to OpenAI, Reports Indicate

Deep News03-19

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is reportedly planning to supply its next-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM4) chips to OpenAI for use in the ChatGPT maker's first proprietary artificial intelligence processor.

Last year, Samsung signed a letter of intent to provide memory chips for OpenAI's data centers, aiming to meet the increasing demands of its Stargate project.

Key details from the report include the following:

Citing unnamed industry sources, the report indicates that Samsung intends to supply up to 8 billion gigabits (Gb) of 12-layer HBM4 chips to OpenAI in the second half of this year.

It is also reported that these HBM4 chips will be paired with OpenAI's first AI processor. This custom chip, developed in collaboration with Broadcom, is expected to be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company starting in the third quarter, with a target launch before the end of the year.

Last year, OpenAI partnered with Broadcom to produce its first self-developed AI processor. This collaboration represents the latest chip-related partnership for the ChatGPT creator as it works to secure the necessary computing power to handle a surge in demand for its services.

On Wednesday, Samsung and AMD signed a memorandum of understanding to expand their strategic cooperation in supplying memory chips for AI infrastructure. According to the agreement, Samsung will become the primary supplier of HBM4 chips for AMD's upcoming AI GPUs.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. declined to comment on the report. OpenAI could not be reached for immediate comment outside of regular business hours.
