The founders said they are unwilling to bear the operational pressure that comes with boosting user engagement. The seven founders of Anthropic have stated they are committed to keeping Claude ad-free.
In a letter included in its S-1 filing, the founders wrote that Claude's sole purpose is to provide users with valuable answers. "Once advertising is folded into corporate revenue targets, pressure to optimize user engagement follows," the founders said. "We chose not to let that pressure fall on the Claude product."
This commitment puts the company in sharp contrast with OpenAI. OpenAI began as a chatbot aimed at ordinary consumers, with a large number of free users driving ChatGPT's rapid growth. OpenAI expects advertising to become an important revenue source in the coming years.
Anthropic has also publicly attacked rival OpenAI on this point. In February of this year, the company ran a Super Bowl advertisement with the tagline: "Ads are coming to the world of AI, but not to Claude."
That commitment, however, does not mean Anthropic itself will not spend heavily on advertising. The filing shows that in 2025 the company's marketing and advertising spending rose by $170 million year over year, with an additional $273 million added in the first half of 2026 for media promotion tied to product launches.
