According to informed sources, Microsoft has agreed to lease a data center project in Texas, USA, which was originally developed for Oracle and OpenAI. The facility in Abilene has a total capacity of approximately 700 megawatts and is located adjacent to Oracle and OpenAI's flagship "Stargate" campus. The sources indicated that Microsoft reached the agreement with developer Crusoe after Oracle and OpenAI abandoned negotiations to occupy the campus. The individuals spoke on condition of anonymity due to the private nature of the discussions.
The world's largest software manufacturer is increasing its data center leasing activities to meet demand from cloud computing customers and computational needs for its internal artificial intelligence operations. In the previous quarter, Microsoft committed to leasing under-construction server campuses valued at approximately $50 billion. This flurry of activity marks a sharp reversal from the same period last year, when Microsoft paused several data center projects.
Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that negotiations between Oracle and OpenAI regarding occupancy of the Abilene campus facilities had reached an impasse due to financing issues and OpenAI's frequently changing requirements, ultimately leading to the collapse of talks. OpenAI stated at the time that it had opted to use other data centers.
Meta Platforms also held discussions about leasing the campus, while tech news platform The Information previously reported that Microsoft was similarly negotiating a lease agreement.
Microsoft, Crusoe, and Meta Platforms all declined to comment.
The Abilene campus is one of the most high-profile projects in the artificial intelligence era. Now, the larger campus will host two major competitors, Microsoft and Oracle, side by side. Oracle has already rapidly deployed servers at its local campus for OpenAI to use in product training and operational deployment.
