To mark the 57th World Earth Day and the 31st World Book Day, Tongqing Community in Xihongmen Town recently collaborated with partner organizations including Beijing Commerce and Trade School, Beijing Tianhong Baodi Property Management and Operation Co., Ltd., and Beijing Xinhaoyuan Property Service Co., Ltd. to organize a themed environmental activity named "Protecting Earth, Reading for the Future." The event integrated environmental awareness campaigns, waste sorting education, book sharing sessions, and fun sports activities, creating a program rich in both knowledge and entertainment. What kind of sparks would fly when "green fashion" met "youthful creativity"? On the day of the event, representatives of teachers and students from Beijing Commerce and Trade School visited the Waste Sorting Education Center in Tongqing Community, embarking on a unique environmental journey. At the scene, the students transformed into confident "gold medal guides." Using illustrated display boards, they explained otherwise dry topics such as waste classification standards, disposal guidelines, and resource recycling in a clear and relatable manner. A series of creative paintings and handmade artworks themed around "World Earth Day" attracted widespread admiration. With their brushes, the students sketched green visions, and with their skillful hands, they conveyed environmental concepts, making abstract ideas visible, tangible, and more heartfelt.
As the students performed a lively and graceful dance, activities at the secondary venue in Square 35 officially commenced. This beautiful convergence of Earth Day and Book Day represented both a solemn commitment to protecting clear waters and green mountains and a concrete practice of nurturing spiritual civilization. The established Waste Sorting Education Center and community library stand as vivid testaments to turning green development and cultural benefits for residents into reality. The event also called on everyone to use this activity as a new starting point, actively participate in waste sorting, engage in nationwide reading initiatives, strive to be practitioners of green living and builders of a scholarly community, and work together to create a more livable and civilized beautiful homeland.
During the event, students from the commerce and trade school delivered expressive recitations. Accompanied by the fragrance of books and through the medium of words, they conveyed the power of reading ahead of World Book Day, expressing their yearning for a better life and demonstrating their sincere dedication to protecting their home. The environmentally themed fun sports meet then kicked off brilliantly! Teams dressed in red, blue, green, and gray—colors corresponding to common household waste bins—made a spirited and orderly appearance, showcasing creativity aligned with environmental themes. On the field, participants competed with high morale and determination as various fun events unfolded: "Book Balancing Ball Walk" tested patience and balance while moving steadily forward; "Environmental Plank Shoe Relay" highlighted teamwork through synchronized steps; "Environmental Puzzle Relay" cleverly incorporated waste sorting quizzes, combining sports with science education; "Fun Waste Sorting Ball Toss" reinforced classification standards through relaxed interaction; and the气势如虹 "Environmental Tug-of-War" raised the atmosphere to a climax. The entire competition was intense yet orderly and full of amusement. To ensure fairness, the judging panel meticulously organized tie-breakers for equal scores. After fierce competition, rankings for each event were determined, total scores were announced on-site, and an awards ceremony was held to honor the winning teams. The event concluded successfully amidst laughter and group photos capturing the joyful moments.
By combining education with entertainment, this activity deeply integrated environmental awareness with reading culture. It not only enriched the residents' cultural and spiritual lives and enhanced their environmental consciousness and waste sorting skills but also strengthened the bonds between the community, the school, and the residents. It fostered a strong atmosphere of全民爱读书 (nationwide love for reading) and全民护地球 (nationwide Earth protection), infusing warm and powerful energy into the building of a green, scholarly, and harmonious community.
