Starting next year, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) will equip its largest A350 aircraft with brand-new suites, transforming and upgrading its top-tier cabin. The airline will order more Porsche luxury cars for its high-end passengers, providing tarmac-to-terminal transfer service directly from the terminal to the aircraft. Delta is also launching a brand-new onboard dining menu, adding Blanton's Bourbon, introducing new tableware, and rolling out several other supporting upgrades.

As the most profitable airline in the United States, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) now faces a premium customer service challenge: not enough Porsche cars. The airline currently has 40 luxury Porsches dedicated to transporting high-value passengers directly from the terminal to the aircraft. Ranjan Goswami, Delta's Chief Marketing and Product Officer, said in an interview: "Over the past few years, demand for this service has continued to rise, and we found that the existing 40 cars can no longer meet demand. So we will expand the fleet to 70 vehicles."

This is just one of many upgrades Delta is rolling out for its most premium and most expensive Delta One suite cabin. The Porsche transfer is a VIP value-added paid service. Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) announced on Wednesday that it will equip its premium cabin with new tableware, custom Missoni mini pillows, an updated full food and beverage menu, and new additions including smoothies with champagne and Blanton's Bourbon. Most of these new items will debut by the end of this month on flights departing from Los Angeles, and will gradually roll out to other routes over the following months. Delta also plans to officially launch its next-generation Delta One suite when it receives its first Airbus A350-1000 in early next year: larger screens, and flat-bed seats with thicker, lighter cushions.

This upgrade does not involve economy class or premium economy class. Executives said the company has already begun planning retrofit plans for other aircraft types, covering smaller Airbus aircraft as well as Boeing 787 Dreamliners to be delivered over the next decade. Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) has been deeply engaged in premium service for nearly 20 years; United Airlines has also been pushing into the premium seat business for more than a decade. Other airlines are likewise doubling down on high-priced cabin products. Goswami said: "We must continuously anticipate what customers will need next, and plan ahead." He noted that this Delta One cabin upgrade project places great emphasis on detail and quality, whether it is the sliding suite cabin door or the brand-new tableware printed with the Delta logo — all built to durability standards. The airline has already conducted impact-resistance tests on some products, but it faces another small problem — passengers simply love these items too much. "I believe some items will be very popular with passengers. Of course, we hope everyone won't take them away."
