During the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, BMW presented its latest-generation driver assistance system, branded as BMW Intelligent Driving Assistance, for the first time. This system is specifically developed for real-world driving conditions in China, aiming to provide Chinese users with a comprehensive, collaborative, and safety-first assisted driving experience that covers all driving scenarios.
The new-generation BMW iX3 will come standard with the BMW Intelligent Driving Assistance system across all trims, featuring full-scenario coverage that includes both urban and highway navigation assistance. In the future, more new BMW models will be equipped with this system, delivering what the company describes as "equal intelligence across both combustion and electric vehicles."
Developed through a deep collaboration with Momenta, the system leverages Momenta's R7 reinforcement learning and world model technology. It has been trained using AI on 15 billion kilometers of Chinese road data and relies on a high-performance perception hardware setup combining high-definition cameras with millimeter-wave radar. This allows for robust perception across diverse scenarios, advancing the system's capability from merely "perceiving the environment" to truly "understanding the environment."
BMW Intelligent Driving Assistance covers both urban and highway navigation functions, while also supporting open-road scenarios. In city traffic, the system can handle typical situations such as stop-and-go congestion, complex multi-directional intersections, lane prediction and selection at traffic lights, construction detours, three-point turns, and narrow roads. On highways, it supports elevated road merging, automatic ramp entry and exit, ETC automatic toll passage, and long-distance high-speed driving.
At the level of human-vehicle collaboration, the system employs coordinated braking, acceleration, and steering to work seamlessly with the driver in situations like stopping, lane changes, merging, and turning. On the human-machine interaction front, BMW's pioneering Panoramic iDrive is driver-centric, ensuring information is delivered without distraction and operations do not interrupt focus. The BMW Driving Super Brain integrates seamlessly with the Intelligent Driving Assistance system, coordinating vehicle dynamics with millisecond-level response to achieve smooth braking, fluid acceleration, and precise steering, ensuring that the assisted driving experience retains the familiar quality feel of a BMW.
