Elon Musk's social media company X has agreed to revise its verification mechanism in the European Union after being fined 120 million euros, a spokesperson for the European Commission disclosed on Thursday.
In December of last year, EU technology regulators imposed a fine on X for violating online content regulations. This marked the first penalty issued under the EU's landmark Digital Services Act, a legislation that had previously drawn criticism from the U.S. government.
Thomas Regnier, a spokesperson for the European Commission, stated that X has submitted remedial measures concerning its blue check verification feature.
The EU's sanctions against X followed a two-year investigation conducted under the EU's Digital Services Act, which mandates that online platforms take stronger action to combat illegal and harmful content.
In July 2024, the European Commission accused X of misleading users, stating that its blue verification badge did not align with industry standards, as anyone could pay to obtain a "verified" status.
