Tai'an Port Leverages Waterway "Golden Corridor" to Ensure Smooth Spring Farming Supply Flow

Deep News12:51

Spring tides herald the start of farming, and securing agricultural supplies is now a top priority. During this critical period of spring ploughing preparations, the Laohu operating area of Dongping Port in Tai'an Port is a scene of bustling activity. Gantry cranes precisely lift containers filled with fertilizer, freight vehicles shuttle back and forth, and workers operate in shifts. Ships loaded with agricultural supplies stand ready to depart, ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of this vital waterway "artery" for supplying materials essential for spring farming production.

As a key logistics hub and distribution center at the northernmost point of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Laohu operating area capitalizes on the unique advantages of water transport: large capacity and green efficiency. It has become a major channel for transporting fertilizer from the north to the south. This year, the port has initiated containerized fertilizer transport, further expanding the channels for agricultural supply logistics. Compared to bulk transport, containerized fertilizer shipping offers significant benefits, including protection from moisture and damage, convenient transshipment, and highly efficient circulation. This method effectively safeguards product quality while reducing cargo storage and transfer times, emerging as a new highlight in the port's support for spring farming supply.

Reports indicate that, so far, the volume of agricultural materials handled at the Laohu operating area has exceeded 50,000 tonnes. This includes nearly 40,000 tonnes of bulk fertilizer, a year-on-year increase of 92%. Container throughput for agricultural supplies reached 463 TEUs, representing 13,000 tonnes shipped. Fertilizer produced by chemical companies in the hinterland, such as Ruixing, is efficiently transferred through the port and continuously shipped to major spring farming regions in the south, like Anhui, thereby strengthening the material foundation for national grain production.

Leveraging the upgraded Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal waterway and the benefits allowing 2,000-tonne vessels access to the sea, the port has significantly increased its per-vessel loading capacity. This has effectively reduced logistics costs for agricultural supply companies, providing robust water transport support for securing spring farming materials.

The transportation of spring farming supplies is crucial for agricultural timing and livelihoods. To ensure the safety and smooth flow of waterway transport for these materials, government and enterprises are collaborating, with coordination between city and county levels, to build a comprehensive transport support system. Port operators are taking proactive measures, forecasting shipment demands in advance, scientifically allocating dedicated storage yards, handling equipment, and labor, and opening exclusive green channels for agricultural supplies. They are optimizing the entire operational chain, from bulk loading and container handling to cargo storage and vessel loading, implementing 24/7 shift work to achieve seamless coordination from "immediate handling upon port arrival to immediate shipment upon vessel loading." This ensures that spring farming fertilizers reach the fields without delay.

City and county transport departments are strengthening service support and implementing multiple measures to resolve transport bottlenecks. Recently, specialized safety training was organized for port and shipping personnel, enhancing practical operational standards, emergency response capabilities, and awareness of supply security responsibilities. Joint patrols and maintenance of the waterway have been intensified to ensure it remains unobstructed. Active coordination with lock operators has led to priority passage for vessels carrying agricultural supplies, implementing measures for priority registration, scheduling, and lock transit to minimize waiting times and clear key nodes in the waterway supply chain.

The Tai'an transport authorities will continue to focus on ensuring the unimpeded flow of spring farming materials. They will deepen government-enterprise coordination, continuously optimize full-chain services including waterway maintenance, lock scheduling, and port operations, and fully utilize the advantages of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal "Golden Corridor" and Tai'an Port's role as a northern inland联运 hub. This will help the port refine its multi-modal fertilizer transport system, using efficient, convenient, and smooth waterway services to safeguard spring farming production and contribute to national food security through transport and waterway efforts.
