UBS has issued a research report stating that China Shenhua Energy Company Limited (01088) reported net profit attributable to shareholders of RMB 47.3 billion for the first nine months of 2026, up 2.1% year-on-year, which represents roughly 78% of the bank's full-year 2026 earnings forecast based on restated figures for the same period in 2025.
Net profit attributable to shareholders for the third quarter came in at RMB 16.3 billion, up 2.6% year-on-year, slightly below both the bank's and market expectations. The bank maintains its Neutral rating and HK$48 target price.
The bank noted that despite the company's limited exposure to high spot coal prices in the third quarter, its coal segment performance remained solid. The bank calculated that the average realized coal price in the third quarter was RMB 417 per tonne, up 10% year-on-year, while annual long-term contract prices rose only 5% during the same period and the Qinhuangdao 5,500 kcal thermal coal spot price climbed 31%.
Unit costs at its own coal mines were well controlled at RMB 159 per tonne, down 2% year-on-year. The company's output was broadly flat, with first nine months production reaching 381.9 million tonnes, or 74% of its full-year target.
The company's outlook and guidance remain unchanged, and it will hold a post-results conference call on October 30. The bank expects investors to react neutral to slightly negative to the results, given that third-quarter earnings slightly missed market expectations.
Based on the bank's earnings assumptions, China Shenhua Energy Company Limited H-shares currently imply a dividend yield of approximately 5.8%, and the bank continues to view the stock as a resilient high-dividend play during periods of market volatility.
