Inaugural Voyage of Lianyungang-Suqian (Sulian Waterway) Container Route

Deep News12-11

On December 10, the vessel "Wan Hongyuan 5988," loaded with calcium carbonate powder and other cargo, departed slowly from Berth No. 2 of Xinyuntai Terminal in Lianyungang, marking the official launch of the Lianyungang-Suqian (Sulian Waterway) container route. This complements the recent inaugural voyage of the Suqian-Lianyungang (Sulian Waterway) route, establishing a two-way connection.

The new route spans 156 kilometers, reducing the distance by nearly 120 kilometers compared to the traditional Lianyungang-Huaian-Suqian route. Travel time has been significantly shortened from three days to under 24 hours.

Song Zhenjiang, Deputy General Manager of Xinyuntai Terminal Co., Ltd., stated that the successful opening of this route enables cargo from Suqian and surrounding areas to reach Lianyungang Port’s inland terminals directly via waterway, seamlessly connecting with the port’s extensive maritime network. This development enhances regional logistics efficiency, optimizes industrial layouts along the route, and strengthens Lianyungang Port’s role as an international hub, offering notable economic and strategic benefits.

This year, Xinyuntai Company has closely monitored waterway construction progress, actively engaging with ports and industrial clients in Suqian, Xuzhou, and Jining through the SCO Marketing Center coordination mechanism. By identifying potential customers and cargo sources, the company has refined its understanding of demand dynamics along the route. It has systematically addressed potential bottlenecks in container transport services, optimized port functions, and improved multimodal transport efficiency, ensuring smooth operations for the new route.

Moving forward, Lianyungang Port will leverage the Sulian Waterway to enhance river-sea intermodal transport models, promote regular route operations, increase service frequency, and expand cargo varieties. Collaboration with relevant stakeholders will further boost overall navigation efficiency. Additionally, deeper cooperation with inland cities like Suqian and Xuzhou will extend port functionalities inland, creating efficient logistics corridors.

Through resource integration and service upgrades, the initiative aims to amplify the benefits of Jiangsu’s water transport development, supporting high-quality regional economic growth.
