Rocky Mountain Institute's Li Ting: Driving Change from the Consumption Side Is a Key Lever for Advancing the Energy Transition and Safeguarding Energy Security

Deep News10-21

The 2026 Sustainable Global Leaders Conference was held from October 20 to 22 at the Huangpu Expo Park in Shanghai, according to a financial frontline report on October 21.

Li Ting, Managing Director of the Rocky Mountain Institute and Chief Representative of its Beijing Office, participated in the "Energy and Power Sub-forum · Sustainable Value Creation" and moderated a themed dialogue.

Li Ting stated that driving change from the consumption side is a key lever for continuously advancing the energy transition and safeguarding energy security. Especially as the global energy transition deepens, we must not only focus on how clean energy is produced and how much is produced, but also increasingly on who consumes it, how it is consumed, and how consumption demand can be translated into sustained corporate action, investment, and emission reduction results.

She pointed out that China in particular has moved ahead in the energy transition, and everyone knows that consuming green energy is harder than producing it—this is a consensus.

Li Ting noted that consuming green energy is more difficult than producing it, which is a shared understanding. From product use upward to industry manufacturing and further upstream to resources and materials, the theme of clean energy consumption links different industry themes more closely together, and there are many issues in how this process moves from willingness to scaled action.

Li Ting shared her core judgment: from green power consumption to green energy consumption, one of the most important categories is that the momentum for growth continues to strengthen, and electricity demand keeps rising. "We forecast that by 2030, China's green power consumption scale will increase to 2.5 to 3.5 times last year's level," Li Ting said.
