Insulet Launches Enhanced Omnipod 5 Algorithm Across the US and Expands Compatibility with Abbott's Sensor

Deep News06-03

Global tubeless insulin pump technology leader Insulet Corporation announced on June 3rd that the enhanced algorithm for its Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery System is now fully available across the United States. This algorithm update received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December 2025. Concurrently, the Omnipod 5 system in the U.S. is now compatible with Abbott Laboratories's FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor, offering individuals with diabetes more options.

Key Features of the Algorithm Update

Representing the most significant algorithm upgrade since its 2022 launch, this update allows all new and existing U.S. users to benefit from stronger automated performance and system capabilities. The new algorithm introduces a 100 mg/dL target glucose option, enabling more granular personalization and providing healthcare professionals with flexibility across six adjustable settings from 100 to 150 mg/dL. Real-world data indicates that lowering the target glucose value can effectively increase Time in Range without elevating the risk of clinically significant hypoglycemia.

Operational Improvements and Rollout

Furthermore, the enhanced algorithm helps reduce interruptions for users during prolonged hyperglycemic events, allowing the system to maintain operation in automated mode. To ensure users can benefit from the new 100 mg/dL target as quickly as possible, Insulet has already begun shipping Pods compatible with the new algorithm to U.S. retail channels ahead of schedule. Users will receive the wireless software update via their Omnipod 5 controller or mobile app.

Expanded Sensor Integration

Regarding sensor compatibility, the integration of Omnipod 5 with the Abbott Laboratories Libre 3 Plus sensor also allows caregivers to follow a patient's data through Abbott's LibreLinkup app. This not only expands users' sensor choices but also makes initiating automated insulin delivery more convenient. This integration supports Insulet's strategy of building a more connected and flexible ecosystem. Plans for further international market launches are scheduled for later this year.

Executive Commentary

Eric Benjamin, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Insulet, stated, "Delivering innovations that make diabetes management easier is at the core of our mission. These enhancements address what users value most—smarter automation, more personalized settings, better control, and more choices. By offering a lower target glucose option and expanding sensor compatibility, we are helping to reduce decision-making time and empowering users to live with greater confidence, support, and control."

Additional information regarding these new offerings will be shared this week at the American Diabetes Association's 86th Scientific Sessions in New Orleans.
