SpaceX has officially completed its acquisition of Cursor, an artificial intelligence programming startup, in a deal valued at $60 billion. This transaction marks one of the largest mergers in the technology industry's history and signals a new phase in Elon Musk's competition with Anthropic and OpenAI in the AI sector.
According to regulatory filings, the acquisition took effect on August 14, roughly two months after SpaceX announced it had reached an agreement to purchase the company. The deal is designed to strengthen the software capabilities of Musk's AI business, now rebranded as SpaceXAI, by entering the programming-focused AI tools market—a segment widely regarded as one of the most valuable commercial avenues for artificial intelligence.
Following the acquisition, Cursor's co-founders will join the billionaire ranks, and their team will gain access to SpaceX's vast resources of advanced AI chips. In a blog post, Cursor stated, "We will be able to use the world's largest GPU cluster, which will provide us with the computing power to build more powerful models that also run at a lower cost."
Cursor's Journey from High Growth to Becoming Part of SpaceX
Cursor's AI coding assistant, launched in 2023, is designed to help programmers write and debug code more efficiently. Due to strong demand from software developers for "vibe coding" tools, Cursor quickly became one of the fastest-growing startups and a key player in this technological wave.
This acquisition gives the Cursor team access to SpaceX's computing infrastructure, supporting the development of more competitive models. Before the deal was finalized, SpaceX and Cursor jointly launched their first collaborative model, Grok 4.5, in July. This model focuses on programming, finance, and legal tasks and, according to both companies, costs less to use than competing models. Subsequently, SpaceX released Grok Bot—a product capable of handling tasks around the clock like an AI agent team—and an upgraded Grok 4.6 model.
Musk's Bet on Software: AI Revenue Could Surpass All Other SpaceX Businesses
Although SpaceX has signed multi-billion dollar agreements with companies like Anthropic and Alphabet's Google to open its computing resources to external firms, Musk clearly views software capabilities as a more critical strategic direction.
According to reports, during an internal meeting with SpaceX employees in August, Musk explicitly stated that the company "must succeed at the software level" and emphasized that artificial intelligence is the company's present and future. He told the meeting, "Our AI revenue will surpass the combined revenue of all other SpaceX businesses in September."
SpaceXAI has previously had limited penetration in the enterprise market and has undergone a series of layoffs and restructuring. The acquisition of Cursor is seen as a key move to turn the business around and accelerate commercial deployment, as well as a significant step for Musk to catch up with OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI arms race.
