The NYSE American options exchange, operated by the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), has officially launched extended trading hours, offering investors new channels to manage risk and capture opportunities before and after the regular market open and close.
According to a statement released by the NYSE on Monday, the extended trading sessions are divided into pre-market and post-market periods: the morning session runs from 7:30 a.m. to 9:25 a.m. Eastern Time, while the evening session runs from 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
The first batch of eligible securities includes ETF options tracking assets such as the S&P 500 Index, Russell 2000 Index and gold, as well as related options for companies including Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alibaba, TSMC, Alphabet, Amazon and Oracle.
Kevin Tyrrell, Chief Product Officer at the NYSE, said the introduction of extended options trading hours is a direct response to market demand, aimed at providing investors with investment opportunities and risk management tools over a longer time window.
The NYSE also plans to extend similar arrangements to the equities market in December.
Previous media reports noted that the U.S. market is moving toward a stock trading model of nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week, with the related arrangements planned to take effect in December, involving multiple trading venues including Nasdaq and NYSE Arca.
Factors driving this trend include sustained global investor demand for U.S. stocks and the need for investors to respond promptly to global market changes outside of regular U.S. trading hours.
