South Korean Stocks Surge Amid Divergent Asian Market Open; Chipmakers Lead Gains

Japanese and South Korean equity markets opened mixed on September 8, with the KOSPI index climbing 0.72% to 7045.79 points at the bell, while the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.84% to 65843.69 points.

South Korean shares then accelerated sharply higher, extending gains to 1.24% as of the latest update, while Japanese stocks pared their earlier losses, trimming the decline to just 0.16%.

Leading the charge in Seoul, SK hynix surged over 3%, with Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. adding nearly 1% in early trading.

On the economic data front, Japan's second-quarter GDP came in line with expectations, growing 0.4% quarter-on-quarter, matching the forecast. Nominal GDP for the same period also rose 1.3% quarter-on-quarter, consistent with projections.
