Recently, the Joint Laboratory for Fusion Reactor Material Irradiation and Evaluation was officially inaugurated. This facility is a collaborative effort between the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
This powerful partnership is set to significantly enhance the region's research resource reserves in the field of fusion material neutron irradiation studies. It will solidify the foundational research in related areas, providing specialized support for enterprises within the local fusion industry chain. This initiative aims to improve the quality of the fusion industry layout and accelerate its development.
Concurrently, the Hefei Xiyuan Fusion Scenario Laboratory has been successfully recognized as a municipal-level scenario laboratory, adding another high-level innovation platform to the region's fusion industry track.
This laboratory is jointly established by Fusion New Energy (Anhui) Co., Ltd. and institutions including the Energy Research Institute of the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center. It focuses on scenario innovation as a key driver, integrating and coordinating scientific research and industrial resources to build an efficient bridge connecting cutting-edge fusion technologies with market demands.
To date, the laboratory has released 26 scenario collaboration opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, covering systems such as heating, water cooling, vacuum, and fuel cycles. This effort is driving technological application and industrial synergy.
Currently, the region is leveraging the leadership advantages of major scientific facilities like the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) and the compact fusion energy experimental device to accelerate the layout of the fusion industry. It is developing high-standard carriers such as the Future Innovation Valley Industrial Park and the Huanggang Science and Technology Industrial Park.
Focusing on the magnetic confinement tokamak technical route, the area is speeding up the construction of a complete fusion industry innovation ecosystem that spans "basic research—achievement transformation—industrial clustering."
In recent years, the district has gathered 67 various innovation platforms, including the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hefei) Technology Innovation Research Institute, the National Key Laboratory for Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Materials, and Zhongke Medical Valley. Initial clusters of industrial innovation platforms in high-end instruments, fusion energy, new materials, and life health are taking shape.
Moving forward, the region will continue to leverage its strengths in the concentration of major scientific facilities and the abundance of scientific innovation resources. It aims to strengthen the innovation platform matrix comprising "major scientific facilities + joint laboratories + new-type R&D institutions" to accelerate the transition of laboratory frontier technological achievements from the research "bookshelf" to the industrial "shelf."
