OpenAI's ChatGPT Surpasses One Billion Monthly Active Users Globally

Deep News06:30

According to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, OpenAI's ChatGPT has surpassed one billion monthly active users worldwide, establishing itself as the fastest application in history to reach this milestone.

This record was set as the battle for dominance in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market between Anthropic and OpenAI is intensifying.

The details are as follows:

Sensor Tower stated that ChatGPT reached one billion monthly active users in May, approximately three years after its launch, surpassing the previous speed records set by applications like Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

The firm noted that among U.S. ChatGPT users who installed Anthropic's Claude app in the first quarter of 2026, their usage time on ChatGPT decreased by 5% one month after installation compared to their average usage over the previous eight months.

Anthropic confidentially filed for an initial public offering (IPO) this past Monday; previous reports from Reuters indicated that OpenAI also plans to submit its IPO application in the coming weeks.

Data from Sensor Tower shows that as of the second quarter, Claude's global monthly active users (MAU) have reached 56 million, with a year-over-year growth rate of approximately 640%, far exceeding ChatGPT's growth rate of 62%.
