Meta Platforms is informing thousands of employees that their positions will be eliminated. This move is part of a broader restructuring effort to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and reduce costs, as the company makes significant investments in its artificial intelligence initiatives. According to an internal memo, affected employees in Asia were notified Wednesday morning, with notifications to staff in the United States expected to follow later in the day. The company plans to cut approximately 8,000 positions globally and has advised employees to work from home.
Sources indicate that the current round of layoffs primarily impacts engineering and product teams, with further workforce reductions potentially occurring later this year, though no official announcement has been made. An internal document circulated on Monday revealed that approximately 7,000 employees have already been reassigned to a newly formed, dedicated AI team focused on developing related products and intelligent assistant services. Meta has committed to capital expenditures exceeding one hundred billion dollars in the AI sector this year. Prior to these personnel changes and layoffs, the company's total workforce stood at nearly 80,000 employees at the end of March.
In the obtained memo, Meta's Head of Human Resources, Janelle Gale, stated: "Most business groups can now adopt a leaner and flatter organizational structure, forming smaller, specialized teams. This will enhance execution speed and strengthen autonomy and accountability. We believe this approach will increase overall productivity and allow employees to find greater meaning in their work."
