Philadelphia Fed President Harker Maintains Flexible Outlook on Policy Direction

Deep News08-04

Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Anna Paulson has stated her endorsement of the Federal Open Market Committee's decision to hold interest rates steady at last week's meeting, while keeping an open mind about the future path of monetary policy.

In an article discussing economic conditions, Paulson noted that while recent inflation data appears somewhat encouraging, the critical issue is whether the federal funds rate is properly calibrated to return inflation to the central bank's 2% target within an acceptable timeframe while maintaining maximum employment.

Paulson indicated that if policy is appropriately calibrated, she expects to see increasing signs that inflation is declining. However, if underlying inflation remains stubbornly high, the passage of time without progress would itself suggest the need for a more restrictive policy stance.

When describing the current situation, Paulson stated that her overall assessment of the economy's direction has not materially changed.

"Conflicts in the Middle East repeatedly subside and then flare up again. Old tariffs expire, and new ones are imposed. More artificial intelligence investments are announced, and new AI models are released," Paulson said.

Paulson added that despite these significant developments, the fundamental economic landscape remains similar.
