Iran Permits IAEA Inspection of Bushehr Nuclear Facility While Maintaining Firm Stance on Uranium Issues

Deep News06-04

Iran has permitted inspectors from the United Nations nuclear watchdog to visit the Bushehr nuclear power plant this week, but has refused the agency's requests to verify the status and storage locations of its enriched uranium stockpiles.

According to a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), while the agency welcomed the visit to Bushehr, it was unable to alleviate international concerns regarding Iran's stockpile of near-weapons-grade enriched uranium. This material is sufficient to produce roughly a dozen nuclear warheads, and the IAEA has been unable to verify it for a year.

The confidential 10-page report indicates that, despite the three-day inspection at Bushehr, "the IAEA has not yet received any information from Iran regarding the status of other declared nuclear activities."

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has reiterated his call for Iran to allow inspectors to resume their work and has urged negotiations to resolve the impasse involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.
