Amazon's artificial intelligence strategy is undergoing a major pivot. Several of its Nova flagship models have been downgraded to a "maintenance" status, some AI teams have been let go, and the company is now funneling engineering resources and computing power into the development of next-generation frontier foundation models, moving from a multi-pronged approach to a focused breakthrough.
On July 28, reports citing sources indicated that the products being downgraded include Nova Premier, Nova Omni, the video generation model Reel, and the image generation model Canvas. Among them, the flagship multimodal model Nova Omni, which was a key highlight of last year's AWS re:Invent conference, has been removed from the core R&D sequence less than a year after its release.
At the same time, Amazon last week cut some employees from its AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) division and closed the AGI Lab, a research institute that had been operating for less than two years. The AGI organization, once considered the core of the company's AI strategy, is gradually fading from the spotlight as management changes and organizational restructuring take place.
Sources told the report that Amazon has now fully redirected its AI resources toward its internal frontier model research team, with the goal of launching a new generation flagship foundation model as early as this fall. This comprehensive overhaul, involving products, organization, and R&D direction, also reflects Amazon's decision to abandon its previous strategy of running multiple model product lines in parallel, in favor of concentrating resources to achieve the most advanced large model capabilities.
Multiple Nova Models Enter 'KTLO' Status
According to sources, Amazon has moved Nova Premier, Nova Omni, the video generation model Reel, and the image generation model Canvas into what is internally called "KTLO" (Keep the Lights On) status.
KTLO is a common term in software engineering, meaning the product will continue to support existing customers but will only maintain essential operations and will no longer receive major R&D resource investment. This adjustment means that the flagship multimodal model Nova Omni, which was highly touted at last year's AWS re:Invent conference, has lost its strategic priority in less than a year.
In response, an Amazon spokesperson stated that the company always supports AI models in production environments because customers still rely on these services. "AI models remain one of our most important efforts, and that hasn't changed," the spokesperson said. The company will continue to adjust its model portfolio based on customer needs and provide customers with a clear migration path.
