Michael Burry, the famed short seller known for predicting the 2008 financial crisis, announced on Thursday that he has initiated short positions against Oracle (ORCL.US) and Nebius (NBIS.US). He cautioned that the leverage risks stemming from off-balance-sheet commitments in the technology and cloud computing sectors are escalating.
Burry disclosed he has re-established a short position in Oracle at $144.63 per share, once again taking a bearish stance on the enterprise software giant. This move comes just days after Monday, when he indicated he had closed out his previous short position in Oracle. That earlier position consisted of put options expiring in January 2027 with a strike price in the $100 range. At the time, he stated, "The position has yielded substantial gains, so I am stopping here. If market volatility decreases, I may re-enter Oracle put options."
On Thursday, Burry also revealed a significant new short position in AI cloud infrastructure provider Nebius, with an entry cost of $211.77 per share. He noted that he chose to short the stock directly rather than using options, as the price of put options was "too high."
Following the release of recent earnings reports from several companies, Burry reaffirmed his bullish stance on a number of individual stocks. He remains optimistic about Flutter Entertainment (FLUT.US), Fiserv (FISV.US), Zoetis (ZTS.US), and Latin American e-commerce giant MercadoLibre (MELI.US). Notably, after Flutter Entertainment reported its earnings, Burry increased his position in the company, signaling a stronger conviction in the stock's prospects.
Burry, renowned for his successful bet against the housing market in 2008, maintains a bearish outlook on U.S. equities and is one of Wall Street's most steadfast skeptics of the AI boom. He emphasizes that the current demand for AI infrastructure investment is largely driven by financing arrangements that may be difficult to sustain, rather than being built on solid fundamentals.
Burry continues to hold a range of other short positions, including against the Semiconductor ETF (SOXX.US), Micron Technology (MU.US), Nvidia (NVDA.US), Caterpillar (CAT.US), Palantir (PLTR.US), Tesla (TSLA.US), and Applied Materials (AMAT.US). As of the time of writing, the Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) was up 1.25% in pre-market trading, Oracle gained nearly 1%, and Nebius rose 4.6%.
