1. Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index (HSI) started the session on the back foot, slipping 0.47% to 23,812 after opening trades, while the China Enterprises Index (HSCEI) eased 0.51% to 7,936. The Hang Seng Tech Index (HSTECH) edged 0.20% lower to 4,595, holding above the 4,500 handle despite early selling. Overall sentiment is cautious, with selective bargain-hunting tempering a broadly softer bias.

Early flows show investors favouring semiconductor names and selective consumer plays, while property developers and heavy industrials lag. Chipmakers such as Hua Hong and SMIC buck the downtrend with solid gains, offsetting weakness in autos and property counters.

5. Opening Summary

The HSI opened softer, down around half a percent, as traders weighed external macro cues against recent gains. While the benchmark still hovers near the 24,000 threshold, early selling pressure emerged across financials and property developers, keeping the index below that psychological level. The HSCEI and HSTECH saw comparable declines, with tech losses relatively modest at –0.20%.

Within the tech complex, sentiment was mixed. Chipmakers outperformed—Hua Hong Grace surged more than 4% and SMIC added over 3%, underpinning the sector. Heavyweights Tencent and Alibaba drifted lower, while NetEase and Meituan eked out fractional gains, helping HSTECH stay near 4,600.

Notable single-stock moves included a more than 300% leap in HQVT after a thin-float spike, and strong advances in fashion house PRADA and food producer WH Group. On the downside, semiconductor equipment maker ASMPT fell over 7%, while property landlord Wharf REIC and Sino Land retreated as the real-estate space struggled.

Sector-wise, early leadership is scattered, with semiconductors in focus thanks to strength in Hua Hong and SMIC. Luxury retail also finds support via PRADA’s rally. Conversely, property and heavy industrials opened weak, mirroring cautious views on China’s macro outlook. No major IPO debuts are slated for today, keeping secondary-market movers in the spotlight.
