Strategy Surges as Michael Saylor's Firm Expands Bitcoin Holdings

The bitcoin-focused company saw its shares climb 8.7% early Monday after disclosing additional bitcoin purchases and a partial preferred share buyback executed last week. This jump has pushed Strategy's stock into positive territory for the year, with gains of roughly 1% since January, marking a significant turnaround after several challenging months for the bitcoin heavyweight.

The rally follows a Monday 8-K filing in which Strategy revealed it acquired 950 bitcoins last week and repurchased approximately 1.77 million shares of its STRC series preferred stock. The substantial bitcoin holder also allocated $57.4 million toward preferred dividends and interest on existing debt, leaving the company with $1.05 billion in operating cash and $5.04 billion in reserve funds after completing these moves.

This announcement coincided with bitcoin surging more than 6% to surpass $85,000, reaching its highest level since January. Prior to the filing, company founder Michael Saylor posted a cryptic message on X on Sunday: "A little more orange," a nod to the cryptocurrency's signature color.

Strategy had been grappling with a prolonged bear market for bitcoin and the broader crypto sector. The downturn in digital asset prices pressured the company's capital deployment model, forcing it to sell bitcoin and equities to meet debt obligations and preferred dividend payments. A further blow came when the U.S. Senate rejected the industry-critical CLEAR Act, triggering a drop in coin prices.

Saylor, alongside Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, has urged the sector to move past this legislative setback and continue advancing without the bill. On September 17, 2025, in New York, the executive chairman and co-founder of Strategy attended the "Bitcoin Treasury Closed-Door Summit."
