According to Bloomberg, the United States is seeking to join a legal challenge brought by Elon Musk that demands the annulment of a 120 million euro (approximately 136.5 million US dollars) fine imposed by the European Union on his social media platform X for breaching online rules.
The Trump administration has filed an application with the EU General Court in support of X's bid to overturn this landmark case. The fine decision, issued by the European Commission last December, has since become a focal point in increasingly strained transatlantic relations between the US and Europe.
Brett Shumate, Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Division at the US Department of Justice, said in a statement:
"The European Commission is improperly attempting to expand its regulatory authority to encompass American companies even when those companies do not have a presence or operations within its jurisdiction."
He stated:
"We will not tolerate the European Commission engaging in regulatory overreach in an attempt to control America's engines of innovation and economic growth."
The European Commission had previously determined that X violated relevant transparency requirements and misled users through the design of its verification mechanism.
