US Markets Rally: S&P 500 Posts Best Weekly Gain Since April as Weaker Jobs Data Eases Rate Hike Concerns

Deep News05:48

U.S. stock markets closed higher on Friday, following the release of employment data showing an unexpected decline in July payrolls, a development that could prompt the Federal Reserve to delay interest rate increases.

The S&P 500 index set a new record high and achieved its strongest weekly performance since April.

The technology-focused Nasdaq 100 advanced 1.2%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 3%.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday revealed that nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000 in July, with significant downward revisions to the previous two months' figures. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.1% as the labor force participation rate declined.

The data suggests that while consumer demand remains resilient, continuing to encourage some employers to hire, the labor market may be starting to weaken under the influence of rising prices and uncertainty stemming from the conflict in Iran.

Brent Wilsey, Chief Investment Officer at Wilsey Asset Management, commented, "While a single weak employment report is unlikely to dictate the Fed's policy direction, we believe the Fed will maintain its wait-and-see stance on interest rates, allowing more time to observe subsequent economic data."

The Richmond Fed President noted that the U.S. labor market appears to be in a "fragile balance," extending the low-hiring environment observed over the past year.

In the Middle East, the Iranian government is reportedly debating the specific wording of a proposed agreement with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a U.S. official, once the agreement between Oman and Iran to resume commercial shipping is announced, the U.S. would lift its maritime blockade on Iranian ports.

Joe Gilbert, Portfolio Manager at Integrity Asset Management, stated, "As progress on the Strait of Hormuz deal appears promising, the upward pressure on interest rates has partially eased, leading investors to rotate back into the previously leading technology stocks."

Shares of Coherent Corp. surged on Friday. Microchip Technology also saw its stock rise after issuing a better-than-expected second-quarter forecast.

At the close of trading, the S&P 500 rose 0.6% to 7,757.64 points;

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3% to 54,036.93 points;

The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 1.3% to 26,690.62 points;

The Nasdaq 100 increased 1.2% to 29,722.3 points;

The Russell 2000 Index rose 1.1% to 3,034.494 points.
