Qatar has reported that an operational accident during the startup process at the Ras Laffan Industrial City led to an explosion, resulting in dozens of injuries.
The operator, QatarEnergy, stated that an explosion and fire occurred on Sunday at the Barzan gas supply facility. Qatar's Ministry of Interior posted online that the explosion caused injuries to 54 people, with 18 individuals missing.
The Barzan gas plant supplies natural gas for domestic industry and power generation in Qatar. It is currently unclear whether liquefied natural gas (LNG) production will be affected. Qatar was the world's second-largest LNG exporter prior to the conflict. In the early stages of the U.S.-Iran conflict, Qatar suspended LNG production due to attacks on its massive LNG facilities and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
