This summer's cascade of extreme weather has hammered global energy supply chains: reduced rainfall has forced the Panama Canal to slash daily transit slots, swarms of jellyfish have shut down nuclear reactors, and drought on European rivers has driven up shipping costs. Experts point out that as human-caused greenhouse gas emissions amplify the frequency and intensity of such weather events, converging with natural cycles like El Ni帽o, the threat climate change poses to energy security is an immediate crisis, not a distant future risk.
In parallel, the global average ocean surface temperature hit a record 21.1 degrees Celsius this week. Over the past 44 years, extreme weather has inflicted economic losses of 822 billion euros on the European Union, with a quarter of that damage occurring in just the last four years. Yet despite this evidence, attention from policymakers and media, especially in the United States, remains far more focused on energy security threats from geopolitical conflicts than on climate risks.
The Panama Canal: A Trade Artery Under Siege from a Potent El Ni帽o
The Panama Canal, a critical conduit handling over 3% of global maritime trade, is facing severe strain. Citing persistently below-normal rainfall and the pressure on its freshwater-dependent lock system, the canal authority announced last week it would reduce daily transits from 36 to 32 vessels starting September 15th. Despite the mounting evidence of the dangers posed by extreme weather, scientists observe that political, corporate, and media circles, particularly in the US, are far more preoccupied with energy security threats stemming from geopolitical conflict than with climate change. Michael Mann, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania, noted that immediate crises like wars almost always command more media attention than climate change, even though the latter presents a larger and more profound threat. He described climate change as an acute and pressing danger that has never been adequately presented as such. Mann also argued that conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and the Iran war are themselves symptoms of the world's over-dependence on fossil fuels, serving as the most potent argument for accelerating the energy transition.
Catalysts for Change: Policy Responses in Europe and Asia
While the Trump administration continues to double down on oil and gas investments, despite devastating wildfires in Hawaii and California, policymakers in Europe and parts of Asia are signaling a more proactive stance, suggesting the current crises could act as a catalyst for accelerating the energy transition. In April, Brussels unveiled the "AccelerateEU" policy blueprint, outlining over 40 actions to promote a clean domestic energy transition. In May, policymakers from Europe and Southeast Asia met in the Philippines and pledged to cooperate on green transition efforts.
Mark Brownstein, senior vice president of energy at the Environmental Defense Fund, commented on the summer's events, stating that they have proven Europe's energy security cannot be achieved simply by ramping up fossil fuel production or securing fossil fuel supplies. However, he also warned that the corporate world, facing a surge in AI-driven energy demand, has begun to quietly retreat from its earlier climate commitments. He observed that the oil and gas industry and hyperscale data center operators are increasingly arguing that they have no choice but to produce and consume more fossil fuels, a path that leads neither to energy security nor economic prosperity.
