A recruitment screenshot labeled "Sam's Direct Hire" for delivery riders has recently gone viral online, sparking widespread discussion. The job posting, which offered a monthly salary of up to 12,000 yuan, listed "985/211 master's degree preferred" as a requirement, immediately drawing intense public attention.
This contrast between the educational requirement and the job role has been widely shared across job-seeking groups and social media feeds, fueling debates about "education depreciation" and "master's graduates delivering food." Some netizens expressed dismay, noting that "highly educated individuals are now competing for delivery rider positions."
Upon investigation, it has been confirmed that the recruitment is not an official posting from Sam's Club stores. Instead, it is a clickbait tactic used by a third-party labor outsourcing agency. The position has no actual high-education requirement, and the so-called "direct hire" has no connection to Sam's Club's formal employee structure.
On July 27, it was reported that the Wal-Mart (China) Investment Co., Ltd. Qingdao Shibei Sam's Club posted a rider recruitment notice. When contacted, the store's HR representative, Xu Aofei, clarified that "the delivery position does not require any educational background. As long as you can ride an electric bike and handle outdoor deliveries, you can join."
Xu further explained that "Sam's Club partners with multiple third-party companies for rider recruitment, with 'Dada Delivery' being a common agent. Riders delivering for Sam's are under a labor dispatch arrangement." He added that all other Sam's Club positions are only posted on Wal-Mart's official China website, its certified recruitment social media accounts, and mainstream compliant job platforms.
Subsequently, a reporter contacted Li Haoliang, HR representative from Shanghai Yisong Digital Technology Co., Ltd., via the BOSS Zhipin platform for a "Sam's Club in-store rider" listing. Li confirmed that "riders sign labor contracts with Sam's Club's third-party partners, and work is only at the delivery stations."
Industry insiders specializing in recruitment noted that the controversy surrounding the "985/211 master's degree preferred" requirement is essentially a tactic by outsourcing agencies. They leverage brand influence and exploit education anxiety to create a clickbait strategy, which is a common symptom of disorder in the instant delivery industry's hiring practices.
As of now, Sam's Club's official platform has not issued a public statement regarding the widely circulated recruitment screenshot.
