Registration for the Shanghai Citizens' Day School and Shanghai Citizens' Art Evening School opens at 10:00 AM on August 9 and 10:00 AM on August 10, respectively. Citizens can apply via the official accounts of "Shanghai Fabu," "Leyou Shanghai," the Shanghai Mass Art Center, and its branch centers and teaching sites. Evening school enrollment is also available through the "Suishenban" platform. Registration for Weekend Art Education classes begins at 10:00 AM on August 17, with applications accepted through the official accounts of the Shanghai Mass Art Center and its branch centers and teaching sites.
Blending Trend Innovation and Cultural Heritage to Enhance Course Quality
After years of development, the course volume at the Citizens' Art Evening School has shifted from "supply falling short of demand" to "basically meeting needs." The pace of adding new teaching sites has slowed, with a greater focus on refining internal quality—improving course design and elevating teaching standards. The Pudong New Area Cultural and Art Guidance Center, consistently the largest in Pudong's evening school operations, will offer 116 courses across 42 teaching sites this fall, including 5 new sites and 43 new courses. The fall semester is centered on the core positioning of "trend innovation and cultural heritage." Trendy courses attract young participants, traditional practices reinforce cultural roots, and teaching sites are evenly distributed across communities and commercial districts. This ensures diverse groups can find suitable learning, bridging traditional culture with modern life. Courses include practical skills like short-video editing, creative crafts like fuse bead art, and interactive experiences like improvisational theater, all aligned with young people's interests in leisure, social interaction, new media, and light exercise.
To integrate culture, commerce, tourism, sports, and exhibitions, two new teaching sites under the Pudong New Area Cultural and Art Guidance Center are located in sports venues. At the Heguangli Traditional Practice Space in the Yuanshen Sports Center, a systematic suite of traditional fitness exercises—including Chen-style Tai Chi, Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, and Yijinjing—will be offered, preserving intangible cultural heritage health practices and meeting the fitness needs of older residents. At the Jingjichang teaching site in the Zhoupu Sports Center, a unique course titled "Racing Light Wheel Virtual Motorsport Camp" will be introduced. This rare technology-sports fusion course combines fitness, science education, and social competition, using simulators to lower the barrier to motorsport participation, allowing citizens to experience racing excitement without needing professional tracks or real vehicles.
Beyond the Pudong New Area Cultural and Art Guidance Center, additional branches and teaching sites include the Pudong Cultural Center, the Punan Cultural Center, the Pudong New Area Workers' Cultural Palace, and the Puyuan Academy (Yuqiao and Jinqiao campuses). Universities such as Shanghai Ocean University and Shanghai Sanda University also continue to serve as branch centers. With artificial intelligence entering an unprecedented period of activity, nearly every district in the fall semester offers AI courses. For instance, the Punan Cultural Center branch offers an "AI Director Creative Training Camp" at the Sanlin Town Community Cultural Activity Center, enabling citizens to move from watching short videos to creating their own AI-generated short films.
Scenario-based teaching is also expanding. The Pudong Cultural Center branch has added a new teaching site at the Mudanyuan Xi's Folk Residence, extending cultural classrooms from traditional venues to elegant private homes. A course titled "Intangible Heritage Scent Exploration: Introduction to Fragrance" transforms ancient incense-using wisdom into modern wellness plans, immersing participants in traditional cultural experiences.
Embedding Classes into Citizens' Daily Life Scenarios
After a year of exploration, the fall day school has moved beyond being a "daytime version of the evening school," developing an independent system. Classes are embedded into citizens' daily life scenarios, upgrading public art education from a "nighttime supplement" to an "all-time lifestyle," with significant differentiation from the evening school in layout logic, scenario selection, and curriculum design. The Pudong New Area Cultural and Art Guidance Center's day school fall semester offers 50 courses across 9 teaching sites, including 4 new sites and 29 new courses. The day school focuses on preserving traditional Chinese health culture, creating a collaborative model linking medicine, community, and school. Notably, it will partner with Shanghai Shuguang Hospital to offer a "Silver Age Health and Wellness Guide" course, integrating traditional Chinese medicine principles with traditional exercise methods to provide scientific, professional health education for middle-aged and older students, bridging medical and educational channels. Additionally, the day school will offer systematic traditional fitness exercise courses at the new Heguangli Traditional Practice Space, promoting the regular, popular dissemination of traditional health culture.
The Weekend Art Education fall program will further optimize its overall layout, enhancing teaching sites in the five new cities, supplementing public art education resources, and advancing balanced, comprehensive development of youth art education across Shanghai. According to statistics, the Citizens' Art Evening School plans to operate 726 teaching sites (1 main center, 49 branches, 676 teaching points) with 2,868 courses this year—a 20% increase in sites and a 46.93% increase in courses compared to spring. The Citizens' Day School plans 252 teaching sites (1 main center, 27 branches) with 1,019 courses, reflecting a 100% increase in sites and a 177.66% increase in courses. The Weekend Art Education fall program plans 100 teaching sites (1 main center, 23 branches) with 263 courses, with site numbers increasing by 29% and courses by 50%. These three programs complement each other, collectively serving over 100,000 citizens. With teaching sites spread across cultural centers, communities, industrial parks, commercial areas, campuses, and scenic spots, Shanghai ensures that "everyone can learn, everywhere can learn, and anytime can learn."
