Also: An exclusive look at Apple’s plans to expand its retail stores in Asia and remodel locations in the US, Europe and elsewhere. The StartersOver the past two decades or so, Apple Inc. has released a number of industry-shifting products: the iPod in 2001, the iPhone in 2007, the iPad in 2010 and the Apple Watch in 2015.On Monday, the company hopes to do it all over again — this time with its first mixed-reality headset. While no product will ever live up to the iPhone, the headset has the potential to usher in a new era: It could kick off the shift to a different interface that upends how people work, play games and entertain themselves.It’s also a risky endeavor that could backfire for Apple. Mixed-reality headsets are still a nascent field, and many people are hesitant to wear a computer on their face. The Apple device also will have design quirks, such as an external battery pack, and a price tag of roughly $3,000. Moreover, it may not have a “killer app” when it launches. But I believe — like Apple — that the headset could be the future of the computer and that the company needs to start somewhere. While the first model will likely be a flop in terms of unit sales — at least compared with Apple’s other categories — the company could still become the market leader within a matter of quarters.More significantly, I expect that future versions will fix problems in the first model — such as nausea complaints, performance hiccups, overheating concerns and a lack of cellular connectivity — and bring down the price. Apple is already working on two follow-ups: a pro version and a downscale model. While it might take three or five years for a headset to become a hit, it’s hard to bet against the company’s marketing, engineering and sales prowess. If anyone can make this product category a success, it’s Apple.The headset announcement will be part of Apple’s keynote address at its Worldwide Developers Conference, and it’s likely to be a long presentation — more than two hours — in order to jam everything in. Beyond the headset, Apple has to cover myriad changes to its software platforms and the company is expected to roll out other new hardware, such as fresh Macs.Like last year, the keynote will be a prerecorded video played outside at the Apple Park headquarters, but the space will be shaded and larger, letting the company accommodate more people. Apple’s “State of the Union” presentation, which is targeted at developers, will follow the keynote. I’m told that Apple has set up two demonstration areas to show off the new products. One spot will be inside the Steve Jobs Theater, possibly to highlight the new Macs. The other will be a temporary structure that’s a roughly 15-minute walk away — atop the Apple Park soccer field and by its basketball courts — and it will likely house the headset.This structure has been under construction for weeks and is quite large. It should allow Apple to show off the headset in a quieter, climate-controlled environment — for a select group that Apple wants to see the headset. While everyone was gearing up for WWDC this past week, I published some major news on Apple’s plans for its retail stores. The company is preparing a big expansion in China, Japan, South Korea and India, in addition to overhauling stores in the US and Europe. It’s also planning its first outpost in Malaysia and will relocate a key location in Australia. Here are some of the most significant new stores that the company is proposing or preparing to open:A store in Kuala Lumpur in the first half of 2024.New sites in downtown Detroit and the Worldcenter development in Miami.A major flagship location at the Jing’an Temple Plaza in Shanghai. A remodeled store in the Opera shopping area in France. Two new locations in Mumbai and a second store in New Delhi. A location at the Al Jimi mall in Abu Dhabi.A remodel of its first store in Japan, the Ginza location in Chuo.I also learned a few other interesting facts. The company uses one of four descriptors for its retail locations: standard Apple Stores, an Apple Store+, Flagship and Flagship+. The standard versions are typically within indoor malls, while Apple Store+ locations are either large sites in outdoor developments or on city streets. The Flagships are major outlets in big cities, while Flagship+ stores are Apple’s most extensive locations in key or historical areas. I’m also told that the average Apple Store within a mall makes about $40 million in revenue per year, while outdoor stores generate more than $45 million annually. Flagship stores, on average, could top $75 million in yearly revenue, while the Flagship+ locations can bring in more than $100 million. That’s a pretty lucrative business for Apple. The company makes about 40% of its revenue from its own sales channels, including both brick-and-mortar and online stores.The ScheduleWWDC 2023 invitationWWDC 2023: June 5 to June 9. The next Worldwide Developers Conference will kick off in-person at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. The first day will be the big keynote address, followed by developer sessions online throughout the week. Apple is planning to debut its new headset at the event, alongside the accompanying xrOS software and fresh Macs.
