AI Demand Ignites Record Quarter: Optical Communications Leader Exceeds All Expectations

Optical communications firm Lumentum posted fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results for fiscal 2026 after market close on August 11, beating analyst estimates on both revenue and profit. The company continued to ride a powerful growth wave fueled by artificial intelligence data center construction.

For the quarter ended June 27, Lumentum reported net revenue of $1.006 billion, a 109.3% year-over-year increase, surpassing the $988 million analysts had forecast. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $3.23, significantly higher than the $0.88 recorded a year ago and above the consensus estimate of $2.97. Adjusted gross margin for the quarter was 50.4%, a 1,260 basis point improvement year-over-year, while adjusted operating margin reached 36.6%, up 2,160 basis points from 15.0% in the prior-year period. The company noted that it reached the 50% gross margin milestone well ahead of its internal target.

By business segment, components revenue hit $649 million, up 102.7% year-over-year, while systems revenue rose 122.6% to $357 million. Both segments more than doubled, indicating that demand expansion is not concentrated in a single product line but spans a broad range from lasers and optical components to system-level solutions. For the full fiscal 2026 year, Lumentum generated $3.014 billion in revenue, an 83.2% increase, with gross profit reaching $1.256 billion, up 173.08%, and a gross margin of 41.7%. However, net income attributable to common shareholders swung to a loss of $6.935 billion due to a one-time non-cash debt extinguishment loss of $7.8 billion related to the equity conversion of convertible bonds.

CEO Michael Hurlston stated on the earnings call that Lumentum had previously expected to reach a 50% gross margin milestone once quarterly revenue hit $2 billion, but based on the fourth-quarter margin performance, the company achieved that goal "well ahead" of schedule. For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, the company guided net revenue in the range of $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion, with a midpoint of $1.25 billion above the analyst consensus of $1.15 billion. Adjusted earnings per share are expected to be between $4.05 and $4.35, with a midpoint of $4.20 also exceeding the market's expectation of $3.58.

CEO Michael Hurlston commented that Lumentum is at the center of a long-term industry transformation. As AI computing workloads continue to demand greater speed and bandwidth, data center architects are increasingly adopting optical links as the primary interconnection method. He added that the OCS solution, cloud module business, and adoption of 1.6T high-speed optical modules are becoming new growth drivers. Furthermore, rising demand for ultra-high-power CPO lasers, initial orders for ELS modules, and broad engagement in NPO all indicate that optical technology is beginning to penetrate in-rack connectivity, expanding the company's addressable market.

In Lumentum's traditional businesses, telecom and industrial segments still constitute important revenue sources, but the new growth engine has shifted toward data center construction by internet and cloud service providers. Key customers include Nvidia and Google. In March, Nvidia invested $2 billion in Lumentum to support its optical technology development. The company currently faces capacity challenges and is building a new factory in North Carolina to produce data center lasers, which is expected to begin volume production in mid-2028.

Following the earnings release, Lumentum shares rose about 3% in after-hours trading before paring some gains. Market analysts noted that the stock has surged more than 600% over the past 12 months, and the high expectations ahead of the report, combined with valuation pressure, may explain the share price volatility. Analysts believe the market will now focus on whether emerging areas such as CPO, ELS, and NPO can transition from initial orders and project engagements into sustainable, scalable revenue.
