Didi Technology founder Yu Hao recently shared his perspective on Byd Company Limited leader Wang Chuanfu in a media interview. Yu Hao stated directly, "I believe Wang Chuanfu's greatness is in no way inferior to Elon Musk's; in fact, he may be even greater." He highlighted that Wang's first automobile production line was a ¥2 million purchase of a decommissioned Japanese line. Lacking funds to maintain the automated system, Wang ingeniously reversed the approach—converting automation to manual operation. By developing proprietary tooling and fixtures, he enabled workers to perform with machine-like precision and stability.
Yu Hao questioned whether there was truly a difference in the two visionaries' foresight, noting both began manufacturing electric vehicles in 2003. However, as Tesla was a U.S. company, it could rely on storytelling to secure funding. At the time, who would have believed Wang Chuanfu's narrative? Critics were quick to attack him. Yu Hao added that Wang had to embody dual roles to succeed in China: becoming both a "Terry Gou" in manufacturing excellence and an "Elon Musk" in innovation, integrating these two traits to achieve success.
