In a recent dialogue, Kevin Kelly and Future Doctor CEO Wang Shirui explored the future of healthcare. While the conversation began with AI in medicine, it addressed a broader question: as AI reshapes healthcare systems, could human lifespan surpass 120 years?
Kevin Kelly expressed that life systems are too complex for rapid progress in life extension. He suggested that while humanity might eventually reach 120 years, it is unlikely to occur within the current generation's lifetime.
Wang Shirui offered a more optimistic outlook, stating that individuals born in the 2020s and 2030s have a strong chance of exceeding 120 years. He explained that if medical AGI achieves critical breakthroughs, the journey toward 120 years or more could accelerate significantly. Wang identified three primary factors influencing death: accidents, aging, and disease. Accidents are decreasing with social development, aging remains difficult to reverse, but disease is the area most likely to be systematically transformed by AI today. He emphasized that if "medical AGI" can eliminate deaths caused by disease, human lifespan could naturally approach 120 years based on telomere biology, which is a core focus for Future Doctor.
Wang clarified that Future Doctor is not merely developing a standard medical AI product but addressing two larger questions: how to replicate the best medical capabilities and how to accelerate the renewal of medical knowledge itself. The first relates to the present, the second to the future. He referenced the Northern Song dynasty thinker Zhang Zai's "Four Sentences from Hengqu" to define these goals as "inheriting lost knowledge" and "opening lasting peace," together forming the true significance of medical AGI.
According to the discussion, Future Doctor's platform brings together expert teams from top-tier hospitals across China, including PLA General Hospital, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, West China Hospital, Ruijin Hospital, and Huashan Hospital. The platform has exclusively signed over 50 leading experts from organizations such as the Chinese Medical Association and the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Through long-term collaboration, Future Doctor is co-developing exclusive AI agents with these clinical experts to create new models of human-machine collaborative diagnosis and treatment.
