Jay Chou Concert Faces Backlash Over Short Performance Time as Associated Company Reports Major Profit Decline

Deep News04-06

A three-hour concert reportedly featured less than 90 minutes of actual singing by Jay Chou. The event has drawn significant criticism from fans, with many accusing the artist of capitalizing on nostalgia. Tickets for Jay Chou's Hangzhou concert sold out rapidly upon release, with official prices ranging from 780 yuan to 2380 yuan. Seats priced at 1080 yuan were in such high demand that resale prices surged to as much as 4000 yuan.

However, the high ticket prices contrasted sharply with the poor concert experience, which became a major source of attendee frustration. Some attendees reported a subpar experience, noting that for the first 20 minutes, the live vocals were almost inaudible over the backing track. On social media, posts advising against attending the concert gained traction, with complaints including "seriously lacking effort—don't buy tickets," "very disappointing, he barely sang," and "too many breaks for costume changes."

Meanwhile, STARPLUS LEGEND, a listed company closely tied to Jay Chou, is facing its own challenges. The company reported 2025 revenue of 472 million yuan, a 19.1% decrease from the previous year's 584 million yuan. Gross profit fell by 43.9% to 184 million yuan, while net profit saw a drastic decline—shifting from a profit of 50.24 million yuan in 2024 to a loss of 51.05 million yuan in 2025, representing a 202% drop.

Last July, when Jay Chou announced his official presence on Douyin, STARPLUS LEGEND’s stock price surged over 162% intraday to HK$17.64. However, as of the most recent trading day, the stock closed at just HK$6.6, marking a 62% decline.

The concert was criticized for its low "Jay content," with actual singing time reportedly making up less than half of the event. Attendees also pointed to extended intervals filled with guest appearances, video clips, and audience interaction as further signs of a lackluster performance. Additionally, some classic songs were performed in lower keys, and poor stage design in rainy conditions left sections of the audience with limited visibility.

Despite high ticket prices, many fans felt the quality did not match the cost. One attendee who purchased a 1080-yuan ticket described the experience as disappointing, citing unbalanced sound and poor vocal clarity early in the show. Another commented that while die-hard fans might find the concert acceptable, casual listeners would consider it poor value for money.

STARPLUS LEGEND, which operates around Jay Chou's IP, reported a 50% year-on-year decrease in its IP creation and operation revenue for 2025, which fell to 156 million yuan. Revenue from film and program copyright production dropped to 69 million yuan from 168 million yuan the previous year. The company attributed the decline to reduced marketing budgets from brand clients and increased competition from short-form video platforms.

In efforts to diversify, STARPLUS LEGEND has expanded its celebrity IP portfolio by signing exclusive management agreements with fitness influencer Liu Genghong and his wife, Wang Wanfei. The company also partnered with robot firm Unitree Technology to produce "Star Dogs," securing a purchase order for 5,000 units worth over 100 million yuan. Earlier, it received a significant order from Adata Technology.

Despite these initiatives, market confidence remains low. An internet analyst noted that while Jay Chou's classic songs and vocal talent defend against claims of poor performance, STARPLUS LEGEND must reduce its reliance on the "Jay Chou concept" to mitigate risks associated with a single IP. Although the company has attempted diversification, including ventures into trendy toys, these efforts have yet to yield significant positive results.
