Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) has announced the launch of a new business travel service called the "Business Priority" product, along with the introduction of New Distribution Capability (NDC) technology, aimed at offering corporate clients more flexible travel options and booking methods.
Aileen Furlong, Vice President of Sales at Southwest Airlines, stated, "Through initiatives such as assigned seating, extra legroom seats, cabin upgrades including seat power, Starlink ultra-fast WiFi, larger overhead bins, and international partnerships, we are enhancing the travel experience to meet the expectations of business travelers." According to a company announcement, the new "Business Priority" product is set to launch in early 2027, allowing eligible business travelers to enjoy priority rebooking, standby, and boarding privileges, providing greater flexibility and assurance on the day of travel.
In terms of distribution channel expansion, Southwest Airlines is introducing NDC capabilities to ensure corporate clients can access its fare products and ancillary seat services through the channels they use daily. The company is upgrading its industry-leading internal API, with a new direct connection option expected to become available to partners by the end of 2026. Additionally, Southwest Airlines has selected the Amadeus Altéa NDC solution, anticipated to launch in the second half of 2027, offering personalized and richer product choices through third-party platforms.
These new initiatives reflect Southwest Airlines' ongoing investment in corporate travel products, aiming to make it easier for business buyers to benefit from the airline's service upgrades by expanding distribution channels and providing a priority travel experience from booking to boarding. Previous earnings reports showed that Southwest Airlines' managed business travel revenue increased by 30% year-over-year in the second quarter, reaching a record quarterly high.
