GSMA Greater China President Si Han on AI Phones: A Potential "New iPhone" Could Emerge

Deep News12-23 20:41

The AI phone market is poised to become a multi-billion-dollar industry, though it remains in its early stages of development, according to Si Han, President of GSMA Greater China. In a recent discussion, she emphasized the importance of encouraging innovation and diverse approaches to AI integration in mobile devices.

Si Han highlighted the recent collaboration between ByteDance and ZTE on the "Doubao Phone" as an example of promising experimentation in the field. She noted that just as consumers eagerly adopted 5G services when they were first introduced, there is already significant interest in AI-powered smartphones among Chinese users.

Beyond smartphones, AI models are being applied across various terminal devices including glasses, toys, robots, and automobiles. Consumer-facing AI applications like DeepSeek, Doubao, Qianwen, and Wenxin have already established mixed monetization models across multiple domains such as chat, copywriting, translation, search, and short video creation.

China's three major telecom operators are leading global AI deployment efforts, according to GSMA's recent report "Operator Practices: AI Model Benchmark Cases Empowering Vertical Industries (2025)." Their advantage stems from China's advanced AI development, early adoption of AI technologies for network operations and services, and a complete industrial ecosystem.

However, challenges remain in implementing AI models across industries. High computing power requirements, data quality issues, and the need for deep understanding of specific industry knowledge and workflows present significant hurdles. The industry also faces difficulties in establishing commercially viable, replicable business models.

Si Han stressed the importance of breaking down technological silos, noting that 5G, big data, cloud computing, edge computing, and AI are increasingly converging to serve various industries. This convergence requires collaborative innovation across sectors.

Regarding AI phones specifically, Si Han acknowledged that the market is still defining what constitutes an AI phone. She compared the current situation to the early days of smartphones before Apple revolutionized the industry, emphasizing the need for open exploration and diverse approaches.

Chinese consumers have shown willingness to adopt new technologies, as demonstrated by their early adoption of 5G services. Similarly, there is already visible consumer interest in testing AI phone prototypes.

Globally, approximately 3.4 billion people still lack access to mobile internet, presenting both a challenge and opportunity for the industry. GSMA continues to promote international cooperation and knowledge sharing, particularly highlighting China's experiences in AI deployment for global operators.

The organization is preparing a dedicated Mobile AI exhibition area for next year's MWC Shanghai, showcasing various AI terminal forms beyond smartphones. This reflects the growing importance of AI in shaping future device ecosystems and user experiences.

As the industry moves forward, three key themes emerge: technological upgrading, cross-sector collaboration, and international cooperation. While challenges remain, these developments point toward significant potential for AI to transform both consumer and industrial applications.
