China-Laos 500kV interconnection project surpasses 1 billion kWh in cumulative electricity transmission

Today (October 8), the China-Laos 500kV interconnection project surpassed 1 billion kWh in cumulative electricity transmission.

As a flagship energy project in the building of the China-Laos community with a shared future and China's first 500kV cross-border AC interconnection project, this milestone marks the continued release of the operational efficiency of the China-Laos cross-border green power corridor, and signals that clean energy connectivity and mutually beneficial cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region have entered a more pragmatic and orderly stage of development.

On April 20, 2026, the China-Laos 500kV interconnection project was officially put into operation.

On the day it began operating, photovoltaic power from a clean energy base in northern Laos was transmitted to Yunnan through this cross-border corridor, marking the first time an overseas new energy project was connected to China's electricity market.

As cooperation continued to deepen, on August 6, Lao hydropower was transmitted to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through the project, marking the continuous strengthening of the two countries' capacity for two-way power mutual assistance and bringing the level of cross-regional optimal allocation of clean energy to a new height.

The China-Laos 500kV interconnection project surpassing 1 billion kWh in cumulative electricity transmission is an important advance in pragmatic China-Laos energy cooperation since the project was put into operation, and is also a vivid embodiment of the two countries jointly building the Green Silk Road.

Next, China and Laos will continue to deepen all-round and in-depth cooperation in cross-border electricity, optimize joint power grid dispatch, cross-border operation and maintenance, market-based electricity trading and emergency support mechanisms, fully unleash the transmission potential of the cross-border interconnection corridor, steadily expand the scale of green electricity transmission, broaden the market for clean energy consumption, and create an energy cooperation model for building a closer Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future.
