Maritime data indicates that vessel traffic transiting the Strait of Hormuz was largely at a standstill on Monday, with only three ships passing through the crucial waterway within a 12-hour period.
According to satellite analysis from data intelligence firm SynMax and vessel tracking from the Kpler platform, the product tanker NERO, which is subject to UK sanctions due to its involvement in Russian oil trade, has departed the Persian Gulf and was transiting the strait.
The data further revealed that two other vessels—a chemical tanker and a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier—entered the Persian Gulf via the strategic chokepoint on Monday.
The LPG carrier EXXON I is under separate US sanctions for engaging in trade activities with Iran.
Tensions escalated on Monday as a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran appeared increasingly precarious. The US reported the seizure of an Iranian cargo ship attempting to breach a blockade, prompting Iran to vow retaliation and temporarily withdraw from a new round of peace negotiations.
In a report issued Monday, shipbroker Clarksons stated, "Recent weeks have seen several false dawns, and while a solution is likely to be found in some form eventually, the timing of any durable breakthrough remains highly uncertain."
