Guangchang Visit: Guo Guangchang Reconnects with Village Doctor Friend

Deep News06-29

In Guangchang County at the end of June, thousands of acres of white lotus flowers were blooming in succession. On the 27th, FOSUN INTL Chairman and Fosun Foundation founder Guo Guangchang and his delegation visited the Shanxia Village clinic in Toupi Town to reconnect with an old friend he met eight years ago.

At the newly built Traditional Chinese Medicine section of the village clinic, Li Yan and his wife Fu Dongying were providing heat-sensitive moxibustion therapy for elderly villagers. With skilled techniques and warm concern, Li Yan and the villagers interacted like family. Even having lost one arm has not affected his precise acupuncture or his motorcycle rides for home visits, as for 35 years he has traversed the rural paths, safeguarding the health of over 1,600 residents here.

"For the aches and pains the elderly here get from farming, I now avoid prescribing medicine whenever possible, using TCM physiotherapy instead. Sometimes it works faster and is better for them," Li Yan explained. Over the years, he has deepened his expertise in TCM rehabilitation. In 2019, he was invited for advanced training at Fosun's Foshan Chancheng Hospital. "I spent two weeks in the TCM Rehabilitation Department that time and truly learned more about diagnostic concepts and methods," he recalled. Guo Guangchang invited Dr. Li to participate in an "Expert-led Training Camp" to further enhance his medical skills, suggesting, "This time, consider going to Nanjing's BenQ Medical Center. Their pain management department has advanced equipment and experienced specialists. We also have village doctors training there currently, so you could exchange experiences."

Neat medical records, various training certificates, and an honor wall covered with awards were particularly noticeable in the modest clinic. Li Yan's latest honor is the Jiangxi Provincial Model Worker award. County health commission staff noted he was the only one selected from the healthcare system. "We are very happy for Dr. Li. It also shows that the work we have done over the years for the village doctor community has gained wider recognition," Guo Guangchang stated. He added that Guangchang County is one of the 78 counties nationwide covered by Fosun's Rural Doctor public welfare project, which has been operating here for eight years. "Every time I talk with these village doctors, I feel this work is right. This is the original intention of Fosun's public welfare efforts," he said.

Guangchang County is located in the mountainous area of Fuzhou, with dispersed rural villages and prominent needs for chronic disease management, common illness care, and TCM rehabilitation. Statistics show that among the 168 village doctors here, the older ones have ample practical experience but are weaker in standardized diagnosis, emergency care, and using digital equipment like AI. The younger generation has a solid theoretical foundation but lacks practical experience in grassroots home visits and TCM techniques.

Based on this situation, the Rural Doctor project team visited clinics in Shanxia Village, Yaoxi Village, Yaoshan Village, and others during this trip. Targeting the goal of village doctor talent cultivation, they discussed customized "one county, one policy" support plans with the county health authorities to strengthen the county-level medical service network and empower the long-term development of village doctors.
