Key Saudi Oil Terminal Set to Resume Operations, Accelerating Gulf Crude Supply Recovery

Deep News06-25 22:40

Saudi Arabia, a leading oil exporter, is on the verge of recommencing crude loading operations at its Ras Tanura terminal within the Persian Gulf. This development marks a significant milestone in the restoration of Middle Eastern oil supplies following the recent conflict in the region.

Data from vessel tracking services indicates that two Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), operated by Saudi shipping giant Bahri, are currently en route to the Ju’aymah offshore loading area within the terminal. A third vessel is also shown anchored nearby. No crude loading activity had been observed at this major terminal since early March.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has facilitated a substantial influx of oil into global markets, allowing crude that was trapped in the Gulf during the hostilities to flow out. While some Gulf producers continued to move vessels through the waterway with their transponders switched off during the conflict, Saudi Arabia's primary loading terminals had remained largely inactive. The resumption of operations at Ras Tanura signifies a crucial step forward for the region in boosting its oil shipment volumes.

The vessels preparing for loading operations are also the first Bahri-owned ships to enter the Gulf area since the outbreak of the conflict. Tracking screens showed the three ships, named Zaynah, Amad, and Qasba, anchored outside the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. They subsequently traversed the strait with their location signals off before appearing at the terminal's anchorage early on Thursday.

Although the conflict led to a sharp reduction in oil transit volumes through the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia's capability to divert a significant portion of its oil exports to an alternative port on the Red Sea afforded it greater flexibility in deciding when to increase activity levels at its Gulf terminals.
