Iranian Lawmaker Warns of Potential Uranium Enrichment to Weapons Grade in Response to Attacks

Deep News05-12

Iranian Parliament Spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei stated on Tuesday that if Iran faces another attack, the country could enrich uranium to 90% purity, which is considered weapons-grade level. "One of Iran's potential responses to another attack could be enriching uranium to 90% purity. We will review this in parliament," Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, posted on a social media platform. U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday rejected an Iranian proposal and stated that the current ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is "on its last legs," highlighting the fragility of diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the two sides. In June of last year, Trump claimed that during a 12-day war, joint U.S.-Israeli strikes had "completely destroyed" Iranian nuclear facilities, severely weakening Iran's uranium enrichment capability. Approximately 400 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium are unaccounted for—technically, this purity is just one step away from the roughly 90% required for weapons-grade material. U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that unless this stockpile of highly enriched uranium is removed or destroyed, Iran's nuclear program will not face substantial obstacles. The nuclear issue has been a central point of contention in U.S.-Iran negotiations aimed at ending the conflict that began in late February. Iran seeks to postpone discussions on nuclear matters, while the United States insists that Iran transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium abroad and abandon domestic uranium enrichment activities.
