Polish Government Denounces President's Veto as Act of Treason

Deep News03-13

Poland's pro-European government has declared that President Andrzej Duda's decision to veto the country's participation in an EU security initiative constitutes an act of betrayal. The program would have provided Poland with access to tens of billions of euros in loans to bolster its defense capabilities.

As a neighbor of Russia and Belarus, Poland has undertaken significant investments in recent years to modernize its military and defense industry. By 2026, Poland's military spending is projected to exceed 4.8% of its gross domestic product, ranking it among NATO members with the highest defense expenditure relative to economic output.

To accelerate its military modernization, the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk had been counting on the European security plan, which has a total value of 150 billion euros, with Poland eligible for 44 billion euros. Although the European Parliament had approved the plan, President Duda exercised his veto power.

In a televised address, President Duda stated, "I have decided not to allow Poland to sign the European security plan. I will never sign a bill that undermines our sovereignty, independence, or economic and military security."

The nationalist-leaning president argued that the European security plan represents a Trojan horse that would enable the European Union to exert pressure on Poland, particularly concerning the distribution of funds. He also expressed concern that the initiative could burden Poland with debt for "generations."
