On May 20 local time, French defense and security electronics giant Thales Group and Google Cloud jointly announced the signing of a cooperation agreement to launch a new European cloud service in Germany. This service will be fully independent from Google in terms of operations and legal jurisdiction. The move is a direct response to the European Union's policy objectives of reducing reliance on external technology giants and enhancing regional digital sovereignty.
According to the agreement, Thales Group will hold full ownership and control over this dedicated cloud infrastructure. A new, independent entity will be established in Germany to handle its specific operations and management, with its workforce and management team being entirely local. This cloud service solution is specifically designed to meet the digital sovereignty and regulatory compliance needs of German public sector institutions. Its technology and operational model will be highly consistent with Thales's "S3NS" cloud service, which is already operational in France.
Analysts point out that the European Union is currently vigorously promoting the development of local technological solutions. This initiative aims to reduce the excessive dependence of critical information infrastructure, particularly in areas like cloud computing, on major U.S. technology corporations.
