Apple to Enhance iPhone AI Integration with New Siri Camera Mode in iOS 27

Apple is reportedly planning deeper integration of artificial intelligence into the core iPhone experience. Sources indicate that the upcoming iOS 27 operating system will introduce a "Siri mode" within the Camera app, embedding existing visual intelligence capabilities directly into the camera interface. This shift will elevate AI functionality from a peripheral feature to a central component of daily photography.

The new mode will appear as a standalone option alongside existing modes like Photo, Video, and Portrait in the camera's mode selector. It will feature a new shutter button inspired by Apple's intelligence logo, making the previously less accessible visual intelligence features more prominent. While the function will eventually be incorporated into the Siri ecosystem as "Siri mode," users will be able to point their camera at objects or scenes and query OpenAI's ChatGPT or use Google's reverse image search for additional information.

Current visual intelligence can already identify real-world information, such as extracting event details from concert posters to create calendar reminders, recognizing plants and animals, and retrieving business contact or menu information. The new version will expand on Apple's proprietary capabilities, including scanning nutritional labels on food packaging to log dietary information and directly capturing and saving contact details through the camera lens.

Holding down the camera control button introduced with the iPhone 16 in 2024 will still provide quick access to this functionality, but it will directly launch the Siri mode within the Camera app instead of the current separate interface. This adjustment is part of Apple's broader AI strategy, aimed at addressing market concerns about its AI competitiveness and catching up with rivals.

Apple is expected to officially unveil iOS 27 and other operating system updates at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with a consumer release scheduled for this fall. Beyond camera enhancements, the company plans significant updates to Siri, including a more chatbot-like interface, a standalone Siri application, and previously promised generative AI features. The company is also working on improvements to system performance, battery life, and software stability.

Advancements in visual AI are considered a crucial foundation for Apple's new hardware strategy. The company is reportedly developing a new category of wearable devices built around an environmentally aware Siri, potentially including new Apple AirPods, smart glasses, and pendant-style devices. Concurrently, Apple is preparing a revamped Photos app with AI-powered image enhancement, expansion, and recomposition tools.

These software upgrades are also seen as laying the groundwork for the iPhone 18 Pro, expected this autumn. Reports suggest this model will feature one of the most significant camera hardware upgrades in the series' history.
